Stan Ajemian of Being the Change Coaching, on his journey.

Stan’s journey

I grew up in a family of highly analytical scientists and doctors, which led me to my early career as a scientist, managing a biomechanics lab while earning my M.Sc. degree in Medical Science. I loved bringing my curiosity to deep questions, but my sociable nature made it hard to sit at a computer all day. After some coaching and leadership development work, I discovered product management and my career took off. I was experiencing great success, and believed that anxiety and uncertainty came with the territory of a high-performing professional.

Then everything changed in 2012 when on a bike ride, I was hit head-on by a pickup truck. This began a series of traumatic events over the next decade, including a slow transition away from the career I had loved, losing my marriage of many years and eventually losing a short second marriage, losing both parents, and many medical procedures due to issues related to my accident. I was fortunately able to spend significant time on my mindfulness practice and my own growth. Rather than collapsing, I have learned to appreciate the blessings in each of these events through radical acceptance and gratitude. I became happier and more centered in my purpose than ever, and I began to shift from a life of pursuing accomplishments to pursuing contribution.

This led to my choice to leave the corporate healthcare environment and become a full time coach where I can contribute to the joy, accomplishment, and fulfillment of my clients. We are all on our journey, and I hope we can all achieve our goals and feel like we are making a difference in our world.

Things I consciously practice to keep myself at peak performance:

  • Exercising daily while listening to my body for cues of how much stress/rest is needed

  • Meditating daily both on the cushion and in little moments of mindfulness

  • Nourishing sleep: adequate duration and sleep hygiene for quality

  • Good eating: a mostly vegetarian, healthy diet, and little processed food

  • Quality time with friends and loved ones, with some real presence

  • Time in nature, with small moments of gratitude and appreciation

  • Regular check-ins with myself that I am following my authentic purpose
